Inverness, located in Burkeville, Virginia, was the birthplace of a judge, a Civil War colonel, and a US Congressman and has remained a prominent landmark since its construction in 1800.
General Sheridan's cavalry camped on the grounds surrounding this beautiful Federal style plantation house in the final days of the Civil War. Mrs. MacLean B. Leath, a descendant of Colonel McLean, who purchased the plantation in 1869, donated the property to the National Trust as a Gift of Heritage retaining the right of her brother to live there for his lifetime.
Several years later, he relinquished this right and the National Trust developed the easement that would protect its architecturally significant interior and exterior features and sold it to a preservation-minded buyer who would abide by the easements.
It has since been wonderfully restored under the care of Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
