Fernley
is the historic home site of what once was a thriving Cabell family plantation.
On a hill overlooking the James River, Fernley was the beloved home of Dr. Clifford
Cabell, his wife Margaret and their children from 1833 to 1893 – before, during and after
the Civil War.
The home they built in the 1830’s is now gone, but the details of their warm
family life at Fernley still exist in the vibrant Cabell family diaries and papers that have
been preserved.
Today, the beautiful land and trees and views of Fernley remain -- along
with a two-story home built in 1991 on the footprint of the original foundation. Margaret
and Clifford would still like it here.
On the front porch you can look out across the river
and distant hills and feel the same sense of peace and privacy Margaret wrote about,
years ago.
